The Troy Lions Club Public Internet Wireless Hot Zone
The first public free Internet Hot Zone in rural Idaho

Hot Zone logo
The Troy Lions Club sponsored the first free public Internet wireless hot zone in rural Idaho.
Beginning in April 2005, The Hot Zone provides free high-speed wireless Internet access in the Main Street corridor and surrounding areas of downtown Troy, Idaho. Users are able to log on to the free connection using any wireless-enabled computer, PDA, or other device.

The project is sponsored by the Troy Lions Club, Troy Television Cable, Inc., and Technology Services LLC. Tom Saylor, Troy Lions Club president during the system's activation, spoke about the club's motivation to provide the service: "The Hot Zone was an ideal choice for 2005's president's project. The Troy Lions support the Troy community, and the club was ready with financial support for the project. Troy now has an economic development tool, a community amenity, and a public servicDave and the Hot Zonee in the truest sense."

Wireless Internet, also known as Wi-Fi, has become increasingly popular, usually in the form of "hot spots". Hot spots typically cover only a single business or building. The Troy system is more accurately called a "hot zone", which covers a significantly larger area. In the Troy Hot Zone, approximately nine square blocks in the downtown corridor are able to receive the free service. "We went from no public hot spots in Troy, to a Hot Zone, in one step," added Saylor.

Troy Television Cable, Inc. provides the Internet connectivity through its recently inaugurated cable modem service. Dave McGraw, manager of the cable cooperative, is also a member of the Troy Lions Club. Contact Troy Television Cable at 208.835.5654.

Technology Services LLC donated network design and management expertise for the service. Technology Services is owned by Troy Lion Tom Saylor and his wife Mimi. Contact Technology Services at 509.334.8999.
